As the Federal Communications Commission wages war on robocalls, phone carriers are working together to ensure their customers are protected from scams.
AT&T and T-Mobile announced today calls across both networks would be verified, a step toward meeting the industry-wide SHAKEN/STIR standard.
SHAKEN/STIR verifies the authenticity of a call and alerts you if it is suspected as a spoof or scam. The call is verified at the network level and a symbol such as a check mark will appear to let you know if the call is not spoofed. With AT&T and T-Mobile, you will see “Call Verified” on your screen when you get a call.
Previously, call verification was available for in-network calls – or a call from an AT&T customer to another AT&T customer – and now works for calls from the T-Mobile network to AT&T and vice versa.
“This is another step in the fight against robocalls. I’m particularly pleased that SHAKEN/STIR data is now helping make AT&T Call Protect even better for our customers,” said Joan Marsh, executive vice president of regulatory and state external affairs at AT&T Communications.

The FCC mandated all carriers provide verification across networks by the end of the year, and during a Robocall Summit in July, representatives from the carriers said they are working to have it done by October.
SHAKEN/STIR aims at ending spoof calls, or calls that appear to be from someone you know but are actually from scammers. At the Robocall Summit, it was widely discussed that while SHAKEN/STIR will help identify scam callers, it is not a silver bullet to stop robocalls. The FCC and the industry as a whole hopes SHAKEN/STIR in combination with other tools will put an end to robocalls.

Robocalls are consistently the No. 1 consumer complaint to the FCC with Americans receiving 4.7 billion robocalls just in July.
