We’re in for a bright treat in the night sky this weekend! It’s the last blue moon of the decade. And no, it will not look blue.

It’s called a Blue Moon because it’s a relatively rare occurrence. Now, there are two types of blue moons. We’ve actually already had two blue moons this year on January 31 and March 31. These were both the second full moons of the month, which is one type of blue moon.

The blue moon you’ll catch in the night sky tonight is a seasonal blue moon. That means it’s the third of four full moons in one season. Typically, most seasons have three full moons. The last time we had a seasonal blue moon was May 21, 2016. The next time will be Aug. 22, 2021.

So, now you know why it’s called a blue moon, but where does the flower moon come from?

The reason the May full moon is called a Flower Moon is because wildflowers bloom in the month of May, ergo the name by the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

The moon will rise at 8:10 p.m. and will set at 6:36 a.m. Sunday, so you have plenty of time to catch the full blue flower moon.

A fun fact I learned while writing this blog is there will be a blue moon on Halloween, Oct. 31, 2020!

Also, while you’re looking up at the moon, you may be able to see the International Space Station fly overhead.

You may have to look between the clouds for the moon and the space station flyover, but it’s worth it to go out and look up! Click here for the latest StormWatch7 forecast.
